At COP31, states must build on the UAE Consensus, the COP30 roadmaps, and the outcomes from Santa Marta. The multilateral system must accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and help secure a prosperous, healthy and liveable future for all. ClientEarth, a team of lawyers and policy experts dedicated to protecting life on Earth have prepared a briefing in advance of COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye.
COP31 briefing – A sustainable and just transition: turning commitments into action through the law
Energy is a vital part of the everyday lives of people across the world. However our dependence on fossil fuels is undermining lives, livelihoods and national security, as well as narrowing the window of opportunity to secure a liveable future for all.
Continued and increased fossil fuel dependence will only worsen these dynamics.
This briefing sets out that the only route to resilience from both climate disruption and energy crises – which are in fact fossil-fuel crises – is to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels by:
- Stopping all new fossil fuel extraction projects
- Delivering a transition away from fossil fuels and towards a cleaner and more resilient renewables-based, electrified energy system.
- Making the transition secure and equitable for people and communities through applying a planetary boundary approach and demand-side measures.
