Improved energy efficiency will help manufacturers deliver more with less

It is encouraging to see that there is a growing appreciation for the benefits of improved energy efficiency. V Rishi Kumar writes on The Hindu Business Line website about some important messages that were delivered at a recent energy efficiency summit in India.

‘Energy Efficiency will unlock hidden savings in manufacturing sector’

Energy Efficiency will unlock hidden energy savings in manufacturing sector. With the industrial sector accounting for more than half the energy consumption, it is vital for stakeholders to explore technologies and solutions that will help manufacturers deliver more with less, according to Ravichandran Purushothaman, President, Danfoss India.

Speaking at the 15th edition of “CII Energy Efficiency Summit on the benefits of energy efficient interventions here today, Ravichandran Purushothaman, said “Increased emphasis on manufacturing coupled with booming infrastructure growth will lead to increasing energy demand with ramifications on energy intensity, an important measure of the energy efficiency of a nation’s economy.”

Highlighting the multiple benefits of investing in energy efficient interventions, he said given the increased thrust on manufacturing and the emphasis on Make in India, energy consumption is bound to amplify in the coming years, adding to the burden of an already stretched energy ecosystem.

According to Energy Statistics 2015, industrial sector used 52.72 per cent of the total final energy consumption. With the industrial sector accounting for more than half the energy consumption, it is vital for stakeholders to explore technologies and solutions that will help manufacturers deliver more with less.

He expressed that the need of the hour is a regulation/policy from the government that calls for mandatory usage of energy saving drives that have the capacity to increase motor efficiency, directly impacting process efficiency and thus productivity.

The CII Energy Efficiency Summit is a platform to facilitate industries to improve energy efficiency on a continuous basis and help them in achieving the target set as part of Perform Achieve Trade (PAT) under the National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency.

Awardees were selected based on their initiatives in energy management and innovative products or services that can demonstrably offer significant energy saving benefits.

National Award for Excellence in Energy Management was given by CII in association with Danfoss to energy efficient companies across industries in the country.
