New energy efficiency platform to help SMEs in Switzerland

At the recent eceee summer study, many of us were discussing how small and medium-sized enterprises are not getting the policy priority they need. The Swiss Federal Office of Energy has come up with an excellent platform to provide more support. What do you think?

The PEIK platform helps SMEs reduce their electricity bills

The energy consumption of some 80 000 Swiss SMEs is considerable. Each of them consumes on average between 100,000 and 500,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year (equivalent to 20 to 100 households), between 500,000 and 5 million kilowatt-hours of thermal energy (heating and Industrial) and more than 10,000 litres of fuel. Overall, this consumption corresponds to an energy bill between 20,000 and 300,000 francs per SME. With simple measures that do not require significant investments, companies could reduce their electricity bills by 10 to 15%. They therefore have every interest in having their energy saving potential analysed by specialists. They can then decide on the basis of whether to take measures and which ones. There is now a solution for SMEs: PEIK, the energy efficiency platform for SMEs, offers a solution adapted to all needs. SMEs themselves choose the formula that suits them best: free guidance advice by telephone or on-line, complete energy audits on site or support during the implementation of the measures. In addition, the energy audit and the support during the implementation of the measures can be the subject of financial support from SuisseEnergie. Offers a solution adapted to all needs. PEIK offers SMEs the opportunity to start an energy saving project adapted to their needs which will also save them a lot of money. Thus, on an energy bill of 30,000 francs for electricity, heat and fuel, savings of the order of 3,000 to 4,000 francs per year can be achieved very quickly.

Three steps adapted to SMEs

SMEs decide themselves and without obligation when and how they intend to proceed with the various energy-saving steps. The energy audit thus integrates perfectly into the development of each company, taking into account their particular requirements.

Policy advice: SMEs quickly and easily obtain an initial estimate of their potential for energy and financial savings, either online or by telephone. They also provide guidance on advice and encouragement provided by cantons, cities, energy suppliers or other organizations (e.g. the Energy Agency for the Economy or The Cleantech Agency Switzerland). Guidance counselling is free for SMEs.

Energy audit: companies choose PEIK energy consultants themselves from a pool of specialists. They carry out on-site a rapid and efficient analysis of the energy consumption of SMEs. They develop concrete proposals for action and establish costs and amortization periods. In the end, SMEs receive a full report including all the results of the PEIK audit as well as an implementation plan with information on the amounts of the support contributions. SMEs thus have all the information they need to decide, when necessary, what measures they wish to take, when and how. SwitzerlandEnergy covers 50% of the costs of the energy audit (up to CHF 1,500).

Accompanying during implementation: PEIK advisors can also support SMEs who wish to do so during the implementation of the measures resulting from the audit. They assist in the preparation of requests for bids or grants. SwissEnergy’s participation in this field amounts to a maximum of 500 francs.

The PEIK audit is aimed at the 80 000 SMEs whose annual energy costs are between 20 000 and 300 000 francs. These companies do not benefit from the exemption from the CO2 tax or the refund of the network supplement. Since they are not a major consumer, they are not subject to the cantonal obligation to improve their energy efficiency.

PEIK, the energy efficiency platform for SMEs, is SwitzerlandEnergie’s new consultancy offering. Launched in 2001 by the Federal Council, the SwissEnergy program aims to increase energy efficiency and the share of renewable energies. The program focuses on advocacy, information and counseling, training and development, Quality assurance in different priority areas.

The PEIK program may be extended by an additional three years in the event of success until the end of 2019. The aim is to produce 1,200 guidance advice, 1,200 energy audits and 500 implementation accompaniments. SwitzerlandEnergy supports the project to the tune of 1.5 million francs a year.
