Look who is supporting ambitious EU climate and energy targets

There are negotiations going on before the climate and energy targets for 2030 are decided upon last week. When you look at it graphically, it shows quite clearly where member states stand. The energy efficiency community has now to raise its voice. Only yesterday, the British energy secretary said there was room for compromise, but it is not obvious. As EID tweeted recently, only Denmark, Germany and Portugal are for a 30% binding target for energy efficiency. When you see the multiple benefits from increased energy efficiency, surely a more ambitious target is obvious.  The same can be argued for both GHG emissions and renewable energy.

Have a look at the three maps that were prepared for EiD. They show member states’ current positions concerning 2030 targets for GHG emissions, energy efficiency and renewable energy. These decisions are to be made next week at the European Council. When you look at them in their entirety, it is hard to believe that we are trying to show leadership, in the year before we are to reach global targets at the 2015 climate change conference in Paris.

There is still time to raise your voices.

This first map shows the countries for or leaning for a binding 40% decrease in GHG emissions for 2030.

This second map shows those for or leaning towards a 30% binding target for improved energy efficiency by 2030.

This last map shows the member states for or leaning towards a binding 30% target for renewable energy in 2030.

  1. For all that, I think there is still a very strong chance that we shall have agreed EU wide targets for all three areas, even as soon as this coming Friday.

  2. Please add Sweden.to the EE target supporters. The new Swedish Government will soon present a position for 2030 of 50 GHG,40 RES, and 30 EE, All binding and measurable..Greens in coalition (minority) gov. want 40% EE, but Social Democrats say 30 will have to do.. Greens will continue to push for 50,40,40, but seems difficult.
