Energy in Demand News, October 29th, 2023

It was encouraging this week to see the IEA publish this year’s World Energy Outlook. “The transition to clean energy is happening worldwide and it’s unstoppable. It’s not a question of ‘if’, it’s just a matter of ‘how soon’ – and the sooner the better for all of us,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. “Governments, companies and investors need to get behind clean energy transitions rather than hindering them.” He is quoted in the Financial Times: “Looking at the world today or tomorrow, no one can convince me that oil and gas represent safe or secure energy choices for countries and consumers worldwide.” Let’s hope this message gets fully understood at COP28 in a few weeks.

The eceee Zero Carbon Industry event will take place 30–31 January 2024 in Antwerp, Belgium. Europe’s industrial context has changed considerably over the last couple of years. Europe has increased its climate ambition to achieve full climate neutrality by 2050, the COVID-19 pandemic has perturbed consumer demand and supply chains, and Russia has caused an unprecedented energy crisis but also opened up new opportunities. This conference is an opportunity to discuss the way forward to not only decarbonisation but also improving Europe’s industrial competitiveness. The call for abstracts is now open until November 20th.

There are three panels:

Panel 1: Processes and technologies to meet future challenges
Panel 2: Energy management and corporate culture
Panel 3: Drivers to change

The description of the panels is available here.  There are no ‘formal papers’ presented. Industry stakeholders, researchers, government officials and NGOs are invited to submit abstracts. Rod is a panel leader for Panel 2. We’re looking forward to some excellent presentations for all the panels. There is also an opportunity for participants to organise one of the three parallel thematic panels.  To keep updated on developments and to receive further conference details, please sign up here for eceee news and information. To get an idea of what the conference will be like, have a look at the films and presentations from last year’s conference.

With so many people on the move this year, here is some useful news to help you along:

John Dewey (1859-1952), an American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer, gives us his view on science: “Every great advance in science has issued from a new audacity of imagination.”
