Quote of the week

The current Ukraine crisis has energy policymakers looking at all options to address the European energy security concerns. Terry Macalister of The Guardian provides us with an important quote by Guy Hands, a well-known financier in the UK who makes a strong case for renewable energy. What is important for EiD readers is the perception of the energy market. Macalister writes that Hands argues that the subsidy debate on support for renewable energy has been dominated by those who believe energy is a market like any other, and that all efforts should be focused on prices. Importantly, Hands states:

“This is nonsense. Energy is not just another commodity but the lifeblood of an economy. No responsible government can step away from a market which is at the heart of a nation’s security and prosperity. Security of supply as well as affordability are critical. So too are environmental impact and public acceptance.”

Lifeblood of an economy indeed.

  1. Before you start eulogising Guy Hands too enthusiastically, you might care to examine his behaviour regarding attempts to undermine the Northern Ireland energy regulator, OFREG. Music fans may also care to note that it was he who effectively destroyed EMI’s viability when it was briefly owned by him.

    1. I thought it was a good quote, that was all. I’m not eulogising him. He is very well known, indeed.
