What we need – an energy efficient baguette

L’EnergieD’avancer website provides a good story about bakeries working with the French energy company, EDF, to significantly reduce the costs of the traditional French mainstay, the baguette.

A cheaper baguette thanks to energy efficiency

Cooking, refrigerating, lighting … : A bakery is a relatively energy-intensive activity. As part of its business of selling gas and obtaining “white” certificates for energy efficiency, the French electricity company, EDF, has decided to launch an awareness campaign on energy efficiency with 1,000 bakers in the Lyon region.
While there is currently much talk of the thermal renovation of housing, there is also much potential for energy efficiency improvements for business.

Energy costs represent about 10 % of the price of a baguette. Many experts believe that through better energy management the energy bills for bakeries could fall by 20 to 50%. With, who knows, hope to see the price of the stick down …
EDF proposes to carry out an energy audit on the bakeries to identify the most appropriate technical solutions: insulation, use of a more efficient ovens, replacement of lighting, and so on.

Thanks to the investment return obtained after energy efficiency work, bakers should save up to 5 % of the cost of making bread.
