A few key figures from France on the buildings sector that show the challenge for a retrofit strategy:

  • Potential to renovate homes in France: 20 million
  • Energy for heating in houses: 37% gas, 35% electricity, 22% oil, 6% wood
  • Construction date of housing stock: 33% of homes predate 1948, 32% between 1948 and 1975, 35% after 1975. Some two-thirds of the building stock have been built before the first thermal regulation of 1974.
  • Energy label existing buildings – average: “E” with average consumption of 270 kWh/m2/year. More than one dwelling out of two has a label between “E” and “G”.
  • Average age of the boilers in France: 18 years, all energies combined, of which 4 million are over 15 years.
  • Controlled Mechanical Ventilation systems installed: 4 million, 70% are disabled by improper installation or lack of maintenance.
