Amazing what you learn. Velib’, is the world’s biggest bike sharing programme in the world (according to their website) with over 25,000 bicycles available. Velib’ is great for tourists to manoeuvre around the City of Light. Interestingly, EiD has just learned that there is now an iPhone app that allows you to find where the bikes are and, more than that, lets you know how many bikes are at any station at any point in time.
It’s sister programme for cars, Autolib’, has the same app possibility. Recent data shows that there are now 1740 cars available and that there are now 500 stations available, of which 180 are in the suburbs. By the end of 2012 it is planned to have 1050 stations. The programme started on December 5, 2011 and already 15,000 people have signed up, of which 5,200 have annual memberships. Those 18 to 35 years old represent half of the memberships.
